Driving

I am really upset. I am in my car driving, I have a donut  in my hand, my coffee in the cup holder, I am adding directions into my GPS, I am texting a message to my wife, I am steering the car with my knees, I am fixing my hair (what I have) and I have no free hand to change the damn radio station over to my IPod hook-up. This sucks.

Now, see how responsible I am, I did not have the coffee in my hand. If I wasn't doing 70 MPH though, you know I'd be washing down that apple crumb.

I am joking, of course, but you know the routine. Our goverment officials tell us how dangerous it to text and drive. That is just one issue. How many times do you see people adding information to their GPS. I have a Cadillac Escalade, and with my last car, a Chrysler 300, you had to be stopped before the GPS would let you fiddle with it. There are so many things we do while driving that distract us from our most important job: DRIVING the car.

Last night, I got on the Garden Sate Parkway, exit 158 and drove to exit 172, and I literally saw four different vehicles swerve off the roadway while their heads were down adjusting something. Nobody crashed, but you know they were no longer between the white lines. Thinking out out of the box or lines in this case, should not apply to driving. That is why I am wriring this. It is completely out of control!

Think about it for a second. Have you ever been driving along about 65 to 70 MPH on a highway that only calls for 55, you turn your head for a moment to adjust your tunes, just as you're going into a slight turn. Then as you raise your head, you're off the road slightly, but you are not in complete control, and you get that sudden rush of, "holy heck" I almost went off the road, I better pay more freaking attention to driving.

Then low and behold, you are at it again. How about this, and don't deny this. You are driving along down the interstate, parkway or whatever, alone, and you turn away from watching the road for what you think is a second, and look up and see how much further down the road you went without realizing the time. How did I get this far? Scary crap, isn't it!

I don't know, I don't want to sit here and tell you I am not guilty of doing some of this stuff. I do dial the phone, but I move over to the right lane and slow down a bit. Really, I do. I know you are thinking bull crap, but I do damn it. Sorry, I was defending myself. I refuse though to text. I have a hard enough time texting while I am walking, could you imagine the mess I would make trying to do it while I'm driving?

Driving has to be taken more seriously. Talking on the phone, even though it is against the law in most states, seems to be the least of our concerns. And think it out for a second, about how many phones you see stuck to the side of somebody's head while they are driving. Everybody does it, so don't deny it.

I guess all I can say is: please pay more attention. "Be careful out there!" Who else watched Hill Street Blues?
