Old Story

Back in the very early 1990's, my company was doing business with BMW of North America located in Montvale. We had the pleasure of providing ground transportation for them since 1985. We did have a very good relationship and we provided them with excellent service. But not everything is rosy in Mudville. One Saturday we were scheduled to pick up a Vice President at his home in the woods of West Milford, NJ. We have been there before so it shouldn't have been a problem. Now for a second, think back to that era, and remember how we communicated. Beep, beep, beep. The wonderful pager, how could we live without one. Then you needed to find a pay phone. Well there aren't many in West Milford and now the antiques are removed from our lives completely. I sent a driver for the pick up, and somewhere along the way he was getting very confused and lost. The customer kept calling. He was very calm and believed me that we were in the area. Unfortunately, every time I paged the driver, he had to drive back to the highway to find a phone. finally the customer was about to give up and drive himself. At his level his car of choice was a 7 series. High end. So what do I do. I made a suggestion that if he trusted me to drive his car, that I would meet him at EWR airport. Crazy enough he agreed. So I jumped into my car and raced off to the airport. I was able to park in time and make it up to departures to greet him at the terminal. He was thrilled. He made his flight, I got to drive a great car then I got a ride back to the airport from the driver who finally found the house. He later told other people at the company how I turned a negative into a positive. As it turns out I told this story to a dispatcher of mine a few years ago. He took it upon himself to help a customer in a similar situation, in his opinon. A driver was on a road that was closed due to an accident. Route 22 in Irvington. He couldn't reach the customers house, so the dispatcher told the client to drive himself. We had two drivers meet him at the airport then drive his car home. Including the guy that was stuck he, used a total of three drivers. I had no control over this situation. I couldn't control the accident. Although it was nice to do, I lost alot of money, and the client was still upset, he wanted a free ride also. So I learned a very important lesson. That when I tell a story, I have to use the line, "don't try this at home."
