Perfect Thought

Perfect Limo and SEO

That's correct SEO, I didn't mean CEO. Search Engine Optimization. Better known as "where the freak are you, on a Google search?"

Blank

It has been a few weeks since I wrote my last blog. I have nothing to talk about. Blank, zippo.

And to think people make a living writing. I always wonder about people that write for newspapers. What once was getting an article ready for the presses before midnight, has now become we need it now, after the event. Then it has to be updated. And updated.

The creativity of writing is such a wonderful thing. I mentioned newspapers, that is just one means of projecting a thought.

The History of Limos

While major universities have not embraced the power of Wikipedia yet, for the sake of this blog I will consider it a credible source.

As it turns out, limos have been around forever. Hilariously enough, original limos had the driver sitting outside the limo with an overhead cover while the passengers sat inside protected from the climate. I suppose this hearkens back to horse and buggies.

"The word limousine is derived from the name of the French region Limousin, because this covered compartment physically resembled the cloak hood worn by the shepherds there."

Become a smarter limo consumer

Okay parents, you want to get a limo for your kid's birthday. That sounds like a great treat, doesn't it? Your kid has his or her heart set on a Hummer Stretch that holds something crazy like 20 people. I don't expect you to know a lot about limos and coach builders, but here are some questions you need to be asking for when booking limos:

Owner Operators

An owner operator in the transportation business is a person or persons who own a vehicle (descriptions to follow of a vehicle) and do work for various limousine companies. We the limousine company, consider this farm out work. We, the limousine company, cross our fingers and hope the job gets completed correctly by the person we gave the ride to.

Owner operators are now known as IO's: Independent operators. As with anything else, there are good ones, okay ones and "I can't believe I'm giving this guy a ride" one's.

The Limo Bus is back

That was a close one. Our bus got flagged on Friday and we got it back yesterday morning. It failed an inspection! Don't worry, it is perfectly safe and has since been cleared. Talk about some stupid reasons for not allowing a bus to be on the road:

-There is a row of lights on the back of the bus used for breaks. Of the six small lights, one was out. Fail.

-The front passenger seat was installed. We had it installed in order to train drivers on how to properly and safely drive the vehicle. Apparently this is illegal. The seat is no more.

The Lincoln Town Car

Way to go Ford, you cancelled the best livery vehicle possible. Excellent ride. Powerful Engine. Great leather seats. Ridiculous amount of leg room. Special packages for rear passenger controls. Reasonably priced. What's next?

Next is the Lincoln MKT, according to Ford. It is a crossover, pretty nice actually. Check it out: http://www.lincoln.com/crossovers/mkt/ My problem with it is that it looks like the mom next door should be driving it; it does not look like a vehicle that chauffeurs professionals around.

Party Bus Celebration

Okay, I decided I wanted to find out what celebrating with 25 other people would be like on the Party Bus. And party we did! Although we only had 10 couples, do your math: 20 people, we had a blast.

What I always preach to people is, if you are going to party, you know PARTY, don't drive. And that means at the end of the night, get dropped off at your house. When the limo leaves the city, you don't magically sober up to drive your personal car home when you get back to the starting location. In this case, it was my house.

Town Car

Sedan. The most basic vehicle of the ground transportation industry. Presently, the Lincoln Town Car is the car of choice. Not your standard luxury Town Car, no, Lincoln had to go and build a car with a six inch extension. Regular luxury wasn't good enough. And you know Cadillac had to match them. Now, Ford can not afford to keep building them, so now the Town Car will be gone. Cadillac DTS, gone too.

Driving

I am really upset. I am in my car driving, I have a donut  in my hand, my coffee in the cup holder, I am adding directions into my GPS, I am texting a message to my wife, I am steering the car with my knees, I am fixing my hair (what I have) and I have no free hand to change the damn radio station over to my IPod hook-up. This sucks.

Flying

Listen, I'm not a frequent flier, but I do travel several times a year. And there a something that I just don't understand.

What I Did Today

Today, I went to the WCBS Business Breakfast with Joe Connolly. This is not the first and it will not be the last time I attend one of these meetings.. I enjoy listening to what the speakers have to say. We had three interesting  presenters this morning: Jeff Vanderbeek of the New Jersey Devils, Neil Savage of City Grid Media and Art Ferrara of Ferrara and Company.

Remakes

What is better, the first one made or the second or third. What the heck is he talking about? I'll tell you what I'm talking about.

Party Bus

 "PARTY BUS".

We have one, and it is a beauty. We can hold up to 26 people. But while on the bus you are not people. You are the party people, the beautiful people and also the smart people. You chose to let someone else drive while you decided to indulge. Have fun, you made the right choice.

One Time Late is an Issue

The way I look at the limousine business is very simple. My office people sit either by the phone or the computer and wait for a customer to give us a reservation, by one of those methods. We then enter the reservation, and when the time comes we dispatch it to a driver or chauffuer, whichever term you prefer. The driver then allows himself enough time to be at the customer's location ten minutes prior to the scheduled time. The customer then comes out on time as scheduled and the two drive off to either an airport or other location that was planned.

What Was I Thinking

I've been a little off on writing my blogs lately. I guess I lost a little of my creativity. Not much to say.

Without getting political on this page, I have to say it is good to have one less (a------) terrorist in this world to deal with. It's amazing to watch how fast the streets of  New York and Washington got filled with people to celebrate. Social media is changing everything. How about the guy next door to bin Laden's house Tweeting what was going on with not even knowing what he was actually tweeting about.

Great Story

The year of this next story is either 1985 or 1986. I'm not quite sure, but I do not think it is that critical. But who knows?

I used to do my share of driving, along with other stuff, when we first started. I even did proms. Although you are up all night, they are money makers.

First Stretch Limousine

Perfect Limo Service, Inc. has been in business since 1984. We started as a chauffuered car service providing transportation to the local airports (EWR, LGA and JFK) and New York City. Our very first customer were the in-laws to my wifes' first boss at Panasonic in Secaucus, New Jersy.

Cars

In 1988 we purchased a Mercury Gran Marquis. It was a beautiful car because it was black with a light gray vinyl top and dove interior. Most of the cars back then were all black. This car was special.

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving that year I had a driver who wanted to take that car home from the office. I told him he had no trips until Friday, to hold onto the stretch limousine that he had and switch cars on Friday before his ride.

Waiting

I don't want to sound like I am grumbling, but I will be pretty darn close to it. Oh, what the heck, I'm going to grumble.

Being in the limousine business, waiting is an issue. A big one depending on which side of the waiting you are on. If you are are a customer who is waiting for a car to arrive to take you somewhere, this is not good if the waiting is past the time you wanted for pick up. If you are a driver, and you are are waiting for a customer, this can good and bad. Bad, you may have to get somewhere else. Good, you get paid for waiting.

Rambling

"Lord, I was born a ramblin' man, tryin' to make a livin' and doin' the best I can."

No, not ramblin', rambling! Although, I am trying to make a living. But in this economy it is getting tougher and tougher. Business is weak, and I know we will survive(no I'm not going to write those lyrics). We have been in business for 26 years and have recovered from a number of hiccups. But this is affecting everyone. Well, I said that, but I still have to wait at my favorite restaurants on Friday and Saturday nights. It goes to show our priorities.

No Help

It was a little hard to think of a title for what I'm about to write so if anyone has any suggestions after reading this piece, I am open for suggestions. Here we go:

Nothing Going On.

I am completely blank as to what I want to say. So, let me ramble.

I did just get off the phone with my son Michael who is in his final year at NYU. He has an interesting dilemma. After three and a half years he completed his required courses, now he just taking some extra credits. Does he look for a job now, or relax and have fun. He is speaking with his advisors, and hopefully they guide him in the right direction. Mom and Dad are very proud.

Passion

I am reading a book called Crush It, by Gary Vaynerchuk. Although I am only about sixty pages in, I'm enjoying the book. This is coming from a man whose main source of reading is the New York Post sports section. If it isn't about the Giants I'm probably not going to read it.

Winter Blues.

Summer time, summer time ,sum sum summer time. My son Michael got me a Beach Boys greatest hits CD for Christmas. I know what you are thinking, CD's how lame. Hey I finally got an updated version of Sal Soul Orchestra Christmas songs from my friend Harry on CD, so I was able to get rid of my eight track cassette. I kid you not.

What I Thought Before Christmas

When I started writing this blog back in November, I couldn't wait for the Holidays. I was going to write a beautiful blog about how wonderful the Holiday season is and what it means to me. Thanksgiving came and went. But I knew I had Christmas coming. This will be a good one. Time to reflect on how truly blessed I am.

Long Road Trip

My son Daniel goes to school at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL just north of Chicago. He had his front wheel drive Scion there but he said he could not use it in the snow. So we decided it was best if he took the Chrysler AWD vehicle for the winter.

Technology

Yesterday I wrote a whole story on my thoughts about winter. I went to change the order of the paragraphs. After highlighting and trying to copy and move a few sentences, some where along the way I wiped out a whole blog. Writing my thoughts is not easy, wiping them out is.

Holidays

The holidays are upon us. Wow! What happened. Doesn't it seem like we were just sitting in traffic on the Garden Sate Parkway heading home from the beach? How time flies.

Customer Service

Back in the early nineties Perfect Limo had an office located in Hillsdale, NJ. This is really irrelavant to the story, but I need to fill space. We had a young man working for us, and we'll call him Will. His main job was to dispatch and answer the phone. He was related to some one else in the company, and I some times wondered why we kept him.

Old Story

Back in the very early 1990's, my company was doing business with BMW of North America located in Montvale. We had the pleasure of providing ground transportation for them since 1985. We did have a very good relationship and we provided them with excellent service. But not everything is rosy in Mudville. One Saturday we were scheduled to pick up a Vice President at his home in the woods of West Milford, NJ. We have been there before so it shouldn't have been a problem. Now for a second, think back to that era, and remember how we communicated.

Left lane

I was on the New Jersey Turnpike today, making the trip from my home in Montvale taking my son to Delaware. In the past year, I have made this trip numerous times and will continue to so in the future, because John is a Freshman at the University of Delaware. Go Blue Hens. I usuallly get on the Turnpike around exit 11 and take it all the way to end and vice a versa on the return trip. What I want to know is why is there such a infatuation with driving in the "left lane". There is a law in New Jersey, (N.J.S.A. 39:4-82)which states.

Wondering why

I took a walk to the the post office today to try to decifer the numbers on a certified receipt. Simple thing, I needed to find out, of my three items that I sent by certified mail, the order in which they were sent. As I walked up the ramp and through the door, a woman came around the corner with a child in one arm and a box in the other. I went back out and waited to hold the door for her. I then went and held the second door for her. Now, what do think happened. There was no line and one clerk. I went to go around her to the counter because, technically I was first.

Level playing field-competition

Wouldn't it be great if we lived in a world that if you run a business by the rules, your competiton will do the same with out doing things illegal or comletely wrong. That the only differance would be by the quality of service you provide.

Getting Old

You know how it goes. When we were young all we thought about was being older. At five you couldn't wait to be six or seven. Remember being fourteen or fifteen, you were beside yourself that if only you were seventeen, then I could drive. And even at seventeen you wanted to be eighteen because then you were officially an adult. OK, but that wasn't good enough, because if I was twenty one, then I can drink (officially)and now I'm really an adult.

One Year of Hybrid

Well it is almost a year since I bought my 2010 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid. And I still love it. Last Friday my wife and I were driving down the Garden State Parkway edging along in bumper to bumper traffic. I had my windows down because it was a beautiful day. Along the driver side of me pulls a rival, high priced, gas guzzling SUV with a woman drving. She puts her window down to tell me how much she "loves" my Hybrid. She said she wants to now get one and get rid of her ride.

Funny Thing

About ten years ago our school had a Spring Social gathering that happened to be on a Port Imperial Ferry. The organizer did a great job in planning the buses to and from our town of Montvale loaded with food. The time on the ferry was a blast. We floated around New York Harbor and surrounding areas. The music was great, we were dancing and singing and enjoying the adult beverages and food. Unfortunately when there are roughly two hundred people and two restrooms it gets a little crazy. Then one of them happens to break so we are sharing just the one.

New Bus

We are looking foward to the arrival of our newest vehicle. It will be a 30 passenger limousine bus with a bathroom. The delivery date will be about the second week in October.

I remember when we got our first 14 passenger limo bus, it was big. Now it is not enough. We still have it, but the party sizes just keep increasing.

Customer Service

I just got back from a trip to San Francisco. We had fun. But if I ever ran my business the way airlines and hotels do, I'd be bagging groceries at the local supermarket. Our EWR to SFO flight was scheduled to leave at 7:15 PM. We boarded, we taxied, we waited, we refueled, we taxied, we waited, we waited, we took off at 10:35 PM. We landed in SFO about 1:15 AM. Our limo was waiting. Our industry has to do it right. We got to the hotel and guess what, we had no room, go figure, they overbooked.
